STD: “I’m heading north, focused on winning the StanJames.com Champion Hurdle Trial (2.40) for a second successive year aboard  The New One.

“It’s been another cold, quiet week with plenty of meetings abandoned, but thankfully things warm up nicely this afternoon with some cracking racing at Ascot and Haydock Park.

WM: “As everyone knows, Un De Sceaux, who goes in the Grade 1 Sodexo Clarence House Chase (3.00), is an exciting front – runner and a four – time winner over fences, three times at Grade 1 level. He has fallen on his other two chase starts  - on his jumping debut at Thurles last season and more recently in the Paddy Power Chase over 2m1f at Leopardstown last month. He’s basically a good, quick jumper but I wasn’t that happy with him during the Leopardstown race before he fell at the second – last. For some reason he wasn’t at his best that day, but he seems to be in very good order now and schooled and worked well during the week. We’re hoping for a clear round and that he’ll show his best form.  His  four rivals including a Champion Chase  winner Sire De Grugy, but if Un De Sceaux delivers a top performance it will leave us in a good frame of mind  in the build-up to the Cheltenham Festival in March. “

WIN: Un De Sceaux (FR) 8 11-7 partner Ruby Walsh minder- presenter Virginia Bascop for Team (Willie) Mullins for E O'Connell. 1-2f. WM: "Settled throughout today, measured all his fences carefully, Ruby let him do that."  JMC: Yes, yes, yes a thrilling performance, congratulations to all, each and every one. Winning like that Mullins tells Nick  "Makes your heart go. "

REVIEW LEOPARDSTOWN MONDAY JANUARY 25 : 2016

WILLIE MULLINS EXCLUSIVE VIEWS FROM IRELAND’S CHAMPION TRAINER

Beau Mome
WM: Beau Mome has been disappointing over his two starts over hurdles. He won an AQPS [non thoroughbred] over a mile and a half on his only start in France and we think he’s better than he has shown us so far. He takes his chance in the 2m maiden hurdle  (12.50) although there is a chance ne might need less testing ground to be seen to best effect.

WIN: Don’t Touch It (IRE) 6 11-12 partner Mark Walsh  (prep-rider-minder) Team (Mrs John) Harrington for John P McManus.

Second: Beau Mome (FR) 5 11-10 partner Ruby Walsh (prep-rider-minder) Team (Willie) Mullins for Mrs S Ricci

 A Toi Phil.
WM: A Toi Phil, who won a 2m2f maiden hurdle at this course last month, steps up in class and trip in the Grade 2 Lacy and Partners Solicitors Novice Hurdle (I.20) . He won his maiden nicely and the extra couple of furlongs today should suit . We think he can improve on what he did at Christmas.

WIN: A Toi Phil (FR) 6 11-3 partner BJ Cooper (prep-rider-minder) Team (Willie) Mullins for Gigginstown House Stud.

Douvan
WM: Douvan has done everything right over fences, winning both his races and was very impressive in the Racing Post Novice Chase at Christmas. He is back over the same course and distance in the Frank Ward Solicitors Arkle Novice Chase (1.55). He faces only two rivals and there isn’t a whole lot to say other than we’re hoping he’ll reproduce the same sort of performance and round of jumping that he delivered last time. Everything has gone well with him since his Christmas win. “

WIN: Douvan (FR) 6 11-12 partner Ruby Walsh  (prep-rider-minder) Team (Willie) Mullins for Mrs S Ricci.

3:05  “Hard to choose as big three set to do battle.”
WM: “THANKS to Hurricane Fly’s exploits, the BHP Insurances Irish Champion Hurdle has been a special event for us in recent years and with Faugheen, Nichols Canyon and Artic Fire in the line-up today, we’re out to add to the Hurricane’s five consecutive wins in the race. The Irish Champion Hurdle  (3 .05) is a big race and a lot more than just a trial for Cheltenham in March, which seems to be the way many folk regard it, and that’s why the different owners involved with our three contenders were very keen to run their horses today.

“All of them appear to be in good form, with Faugheen lining – up following an impressive win at Kempton last month and Nichols Canyon having come out well from his battling victory in the Ryanair Air Hurdle at Leopardstown three days after Faugheen’s Christmas Hurdle win. Nichols Canyonis the only horse to have beaten Faugheen, so this will be round two and it will be interesting to see how things go.
“The situation is a bit different with Arctic Fire, who disappointed when we tried him over three miles last month. We discovered he had a lung infection, which he has recovered from and I’m hoping he’ll show something like his best form. He’s run very well in top races, including in this a year ago and then finished just a length and a half behind Faugheen at Cheltenham. "
"All three horses handle the ground and we’re all set for an intriguing contest. Hurricane Fly will be making another journey to Leopardstown where he was unbeaten in ten starts. He’s going to be on parade today and I gather Leopardstown will have a section of the racecard devoted to him and a video of his career highlights will be shown on the big screen. "

WIN: Faugheen (IRE) 8 11-10 partner Ruby Walsh John Codd (prep-rider-minder) Team (Willie) Mullins for Mrs S Ricci, win distance 15 lengths. 3.10f
Second: Arctic Fire (GER) 7 11-10 partner Danny Mullins Team (Willie) Mullins. 8-1.
Third: Nichols Canyon partner Paul Townend Team (Willie) Mullins. 100-30.

Village Mystic
WM: Village Mystic, who makes his racecourse debut in the bumper (4.05) , is unusual in that he came to us from a different route than most of our bumper horses. He won his only point-to-point in Britain and is a lovely big chasing type. A five year old by Saint Des Saints, he has been pleasing us at home. “

PAUSE FOR THOUGHT

WILLIE MULLINS (IRE) MOMENT OF THE WEEK:

WM: “It has to be the amazing performance Killuitagh Vic and Ruby Walsh delivered at Leopardstown on Sunday when they turned what looked like curtains as far as winning the race was concerned defeat into victory after a blunder at the final fence. I thought it was curtains  as far as winning the race was concerned, and I’d imagine everyone watching thought the same . What transpired was truly extraordinary. I read during the week that it was good publicity for racing. It certainly got a lot of photo publicity but it wasn’t good for the heart!”
