MUSINGS FROM A RETIRED RACING ENTHUSIAST

"No blue skies, no palm trees but the excitement is plentiful."

Pic: Fans of Classic winner Zenyatta show their appreciation for the star mare at Santa Anita in 2009
.
" THE Californian sun is out,  the Californian sky is blue, the palm trees are shimmering in the gentle (Californian) breeze, leading your eyes towards the San Gabriel mountains, backdrop of beautiful Santa Anita. How wonderful it is to be alive on Breeders' Cup day. What bliss to be there. A pity I'm not.

"So this week I went to Wolverhampton and tried to pretend. It wasn't easy, although the track is also flat and left-handed and there were horses and jockeys, although no sun, no blue sky, no palm trees, no mountains and no trainers, apart from Marcus Tregoning, who saw Shy Rose lose, and David Evans, who saw Jazzy Lady win, albeit only £1,940.70 compared to the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies' £674, 846.63. Maybe he should have run her in that.

"Jim Crowley got off Shy Rose (there was no point staying on) and told Tregoning: "Maybe she'd be better going the other way," Backwards? It seemed a strange idea but Definitive Secret attempted it later on, walking out to the track backwards, with Luke Morris jogging behind. When she did go forward it wasn't it wasn't fast enough.

"Perhaps owner Saeed Manana wasn't expecting too much from Definite Secret, because he wasn't there, and neither was Saeed Bin Suroor to see My Trust beaten. Hardly anyone was there, although I met a nice man called Harry, who doesn't back in handicaps  or odds-on and sometimes goes racing without betting at all. I'm thinking of asking him to do my betting for me.

It was chilly, so I was glad I'd had some pea and ham soup. It's a popular soup, with something to attract both meat eaters and vegetarians. As far as I remember, Santa Anita doesn't offer pea and ham soup.

"It's tempting to recall happy days at Santa Anita but I think it's important not to live too much in the past, so I won't tell you about my first visit there, in 1993, when Europe fielded eight of the 14 runners in the Breeders' Cup Turf, including the mighty Opera House, and not one of them finished in the first four.

"Nor will I relate how, after Andre Fabre's Arcangues won the Classic that day, at 133-1, the only noise was the rustle of Daily Racing Forms as shocked racefans sea. ched for his unconsidered name, while a handful of English journalists who had backed the impossible winner shrieked and hollered. The English are never more Europian than at the Breeders' Cup. I was with the group staring at Daily Racing Form.

"I won't tell you, either, about the last rime I went to Santa Anita, in 2009, and experienced one of the two most exciting sports occasions of my life. The other was at the RCA Dome in Indianapolis, early in 2007, when the Colts overcame a 21-3 deficit to beat the New England Patriots 38-34 and win the AFC Championship un route to winning the Suprer Bowl.

"In 2009 it was the day of Zenyatta, of placards screaming 'Girl Power! Go Zenyatta' , and of the crowd going wild as the unbeaten champion mare came agonisingly late to beat the colts and win the Classic. Fan-tas-tic.

"Soon, today's crowd will stand in patriotic, silent attention as Toni Braxton sings the national anthem and day two of the Breeders' Cup will be on it's fascinating way.

"So many questions to answer. Who for instance, is Ollie Figgins III, trainer of Dance To Bristol in the Filly and Mare Sprint?  Is he related to fellow trainer Claude 'Shug' McGaughey III, or golfer Davis Love III, or King George 111? Who is trainer Robertino Diodora and jockey Rico W Walcott once a character in a Marx Brothers film, alongside Rufus T Firefly, himself later a racehorse?

"These are just some of the questions to which I do not know the answers. Other questions that leave me similarly unable to help are, who will win the Classic?

"When you are there, you get really involved in it.  Going to the backstretch every morning, watching the horses work, chatting to the trainers and jockeys and owners. It's a wonderful experience, and draws you in until you are hooked. Hooked on the horses and the horsemen, listening to the opinions, forming some of your own until you really want to know what is going to happen.

"Will Laughing make life easy for headline writers by winning the Filly and Mare Turf? Will The Fugue reward her bold connections in the Turf? Will Bob Baffert's signature silver white hair sparkle as Game On Dude takes the Classic?

"You guessed it, I don't know, but it'll be exciting to find out. "

BRITISH POLITICAL AND HORSERACING GOVERNMENT

We all have one thing in common we are alive. The problem is that far too many people to include the horses are left to existing in extreme hardship and extreme poverty.  Living through hell on earth.

Both the British political and horseracing governments are  "Out of Tune" with the British people  "To Include The Horses" .  Both are guilty of  making the same fundamental error, of failing to attend honestly and decently to ensure the daily rights and needs of the people to include the horses are understood and met in the first place.

Not just for the rich, but for all people to include the horses and all living creatures in the midst of difference, diversity, division and opposition in the midst of our conflicts and misunderstandings.

Both political and horseracing governments are guilty of allowing  "Rip Of Britain" to get such an evil grip right across the length and breadth of this country both in political government and in horseracing government.

Monty Roberts text below to his charming short Equus Documentary
 http://www.youtube.com/user/MontyChannel

" Alright, you know when I am out riding CHROME I often think about the
questions that come through from kids who really want to build a partnership,
with their horse, and they want their horses, to enjoy them. And a question
has come through from a young lady she says: "What do I do with this mare,
that always pins her ears when I feed her.

Monty replies  "Ya,  that's territorial, and a mare particularly will protect the
territory that she is in, that's just the way it goes. Mares and women
are nurturers and protectors, so don't feed your mare in the stall (loose box)
take your mare out,  and take her somewhere else, and feed the stall
(loosebox) and then bring your mare back into a already fed stall (loose box) ,
and then stay away from her during the process of her eating. That's a simple
one, don't feed your horse, feed the stall ( loosebox) and then take your mare
into the stall ( loosebox) where her feed will be waiting for her ready for her to
eat and to enjoy without interruptions of any sort. And territory will become
the phenomenon of psychology which will be reduced and not elevate" .

"TERRITORY,  THEY WILL PROTECT IT.  "
