From deprived beginnings to Citrrus the wonder horse

Pic: Corine Barande-Barbe: never gave up on her wayward pupil

"Champion the wonder horse!

"Like a streak of lightnin' flashin' 'cross the sky.

"Like a silent arrow whizzing' from a bow.

"Like a mighty cannon ball he seems to fly.

"You'll hear about him everywhere you go.

"The time will come when everyone will know the name of Champion the wonder horse!

"Champion the wonder horse!  Yes, yes, yes David is a poet as well.

"YES, but what's his name today? Last year, obviously, it was Frankel, fittingly because, like Champion in his adventures on television in the 1950's, Frankel had four white socks.

"Champion had a bigger white blaze and was better at standing on his hind legs. He was also faster (see theme tune lyrics above ) and could have won the Champion Stakes, named after him, if he'd wanted to. There was very little that Champion couldn't do.

"Now that music is a compulsory part of welcoming  big-race winners, the winner of the Qipco Champion Stakes should be greeted by a rousing rendition of Champion the wonder horse on YouTube) and later recorded by Frankie Laine.

"It's a catchy tune, excellent for singing along with and, one way and the other, ideal. I comment it wholeheartedly to whoever is in charge of music at Ascot and look forward to hearing it on Champions Day next year.

"In the meantime, having not given him the attention he deserves, I would like to draw your attention to the splendid, magnificent  Cirrus Des Aigles. You may have heard of him already.

"I hadn't really noticed before but Cirrus Des Aigles is in a class apart  from his Champion Stakes rivals. Unlike most of them he comes from a depraved background. As a youngster, he didn't look like doing much with his life but his teacher,  Madame Corine Barande-Barbe, never lost faith and, perhaps drawing on her own family background, enabled Cirrus Des Aigles to fulfil his potential.

" CIRRUS DES AIGLE 'S father was  EVEN TOP.   EVEN TOP was all very well in his way, and almost won the 2,000 Guineas in 1996, but didn't; MARK OF ESTEEM won it, instead. EVEN TOP only actually won two Listed races and, in 2002, was standing around at the Clare View Stud (never heard of it) on the Curragh, not doing much, even though he was anybody's for £1,525 (Stud Fee)

"When he was employed, he didn't make much of a job of it, siring nothing worth writing about, although DIABLO did win five small jumps races and a point to point at Farmaclaffley.

"Some would say EVEN TOP didn't deserve anyone better than TAILLE DE GUEPE, and that's who he got.  CIRRUS DES AIGLE'S mother never raced and wasn't much good at mothering, either. Apart from  CIRRUS DES AIGLES, the best she could manage was MESNIL DES AIGLES, who won four nothing-special races from 47 attempted.

"WITH encouraging role models thin on the ground, it was no surprise that
CIRRUS DES AIGLE'S made an unpromising start to his professional life. It took him six attempts before reaching the winning post before the others, in a maidan race on the all-weather track at Cagnes-sur-Mer early in 2009.

"A regular distinction between high -class racehorses is that the good ones are usually raced sparingly and the less good ones usually aren't.  CIRRUS DES AIGLES wasn't. In 2009 as a three-year-old,  he ran 17-trimes. That's more times than any of today's opponents, apart from HUNTER'S LIGHT, have run in their entire lives.

"All the time, Mme Barande-Barbe was teaching her initially wayward charge how to behave, and how to succeed. It was about the body but also about the mind, and minds are a bit of a speciality in the Barande family.

"As you will know, Corine's parents, Robert and Ilse Barande, were the joint authers of La Sexualite Perverse: Etudes Psychanalytiques  (1972)  as well as Histoire de la Psychanalyse En France (1975). Perhaps more tellingly, in 2009, when CIRRUS DES AIGLES improved to win a Listed race, a Group 3 and  a Group 2, Ilse  published a collection of articles, L'Appetit d'Excitation; CIRRUS DES AIGLES may or may not have read them; Corine surely did.

"Having taught CIRRUS DES AIGLES to succeed, Barande-Barbe taught him how to excel. In 2011, as a five-year-old, he won his first Group 1 race, none other than the Champion Stakes at Ascot. It was his 38th race.

"Last year, now mature and fully appraised of the psychological foundations of top level success, CIRRUS DES AIGLES added the Group 1 Dubai Sheema Classic and Group 1 Prix Ganay to his burgeoning curriculum vitae before returning to Ascot to meet Everest, in the form of Frankel. Everest won.

"Back in top form, on his favoured soft ground, it's a day for CIRRUS DES AIGLES. CHAMPION the wonder horse! "

Deja vu as whip bans are handed out to jockeys

By Peter Scargill

"Two years on from the Champions Day furore caused by CHRISTOPHE SOUMILLON'S whip ban, four jockey's yesterday found themselves  handed a total of 25 days' worth of suspensions by the Ascot stewards for their use of the whip.

" SOUMILLON launched an attack on British racing in 2011 saying he was "embarrassed" for the sport after he was stripped of £50,000 in prize - money and banned for five days for striking Cirrus Des Aigles six times in the final furlong when winning the Champion Stakes. His ban was later rescinded and prize-money restored when the whip rules were altered.

"Three of the bans yesterday came in the opening race, the two - mile Long Distance Cup, which involved a desperate finish on ground the jockeys described  as "bottomless" .

"Winning rider Johnny Murtagh received a seven day ban for using his whip above the permitted level on ROYAL DIAMOND and will not be able  to ride in the Breeders' Cup on November 2 or on the final day of the British Flat turf season on November 9. He was also fined £!,600.

"Pat Smullen received a ban of seven days for his ride on fourth home PALE MIMOSA,  while Billy Lee was slammed with a nine- day suspension  and a £350 fine for his use of the whip  on the third EYE OF THE STORM. A fourth whip ban of two days was handed to Jim Crowley for his ride on TALENT in the Fillies and Mares Stakes.

"Jamie Stier, the BHA's director of raceday regulation and operations, said; "Today is disappointing but the majority of races this season have not proved a problem and we are happy with the way the rules are working and have bedded in and that is in part thanks to the jockeys. "

"Three of banned riders are based in Ireland , and Stier added: "Two of the riders banned today have ridden under the rules and are familiar with them. We're always speaking to visiting riders and we are doing everything we can do to have them understand. "  BUT ARE YOU?   " doing everything we can do to have them understand? " Or is it the other way around? There is a big difference between sitting in a chair in the warm, and partnering a racehorse in the Derby or in the Grand National.

FACT NOT FICTION. FACT NOT OPINION.

It is the horses who set the pace in a race, not the British Stewards sitting in the warm watching a TV screen. It is the jockeys riding or attempting to ride a racehorse to win a race who have to attempt to set the pace according to the racehorse they are partnering.  It is according to that racehorse and only that racehorse that any true pace can be set or any race won. This gruelling task has absolutely nothing to do with  British Stewards sitting in the warm watching a TV screen. But everything to do with the highly athletic skilled art of a true rider and the highly skilled art of a true trainer.

Similar to Strictly Come Dancing in a way, in some sort of a way. Where the audience views the dancing (Opinion) The 4 Judges (Fact) score the points according to the Rules of  each different Dance according to each different couple actually doing the dancing.

RICHARD HUGHES visits HAYLEY TURNER
Three hours after her fall at Doncaster on Thursday September 12th

INJURIES

Long-suffering Haley deserved better after latest blow

"I HAVE been lucky to avoid serious injury during my career. I might have broken a leg and punctured a ling, but nothing really terrible. One person who hasn't been as fortunate over the last couple of years is poor Hayley Turner.

"I went to visit her in hospital three hours after her fall at Doncaster last month and she was still lying on the bed in agony.

"Following the initial x-rays and scans she was told nothing had been broken and was sent home. However Haley still felt in pain a few days later so she took herself to local A and E.

"Another x-ray revealed nothing, but the discomfort remained so she eventually sought another option which revealed, fully two weeks after her fall, she had chipped a pelvice.

"It is  both worrying and unacceptable that it took so long for Hayley to be correctly diagnosed'

"Just imagine the potential consequences if,  for example she had sustained a crack in her neck which had gone undetected for a fortnight?

"When you get out of the ambulance that takes you from the racecourse to the local A and E you are on your own. Surely when somebody hits the ground at 35 miles an hour there are likely to have more serious possible repercussions  than somebody cutting a finger by falling off a skateboard.

"Getting injured is all part of the job but there is no doubt Haley has been terribly unlucky.

"I hope she comes back as soon as possible and enjoys an overdue spell of good fortune.

"Hayley Turner in horror fall at Doncaster after ride Seal Of Approval clips heels and stumbles on the far rail.

A week after returning from five weeks off with a broken ankle, Hayley Turner narrowly escaped further serious injury, beyond being battered and bruised, in a horrible-looking fall off Seal Of Approval just after the two-furlong marker in the DFS Park Hill Stakes at Doncaster on Thursday.

"DES CULLEN partner KING MIDAS finds it all so easy
1970 Cambridgeshire winner.

 By Robert Glendinning

"KING MIDAS, the silver-grey three-year-old, ridden by  Britain's top lightweight, DESMOND CULLEN, won Saturday's Irish Sweeps Cambridgeshire at Newmarket so convincingly  that for once this famous handicap turned out to be something of a bore.

"The tremendous cheer that greeted the racecourse commentator's first mention of his name suggested that this 10-1 chance was, in fact, the best-backed horse in the race.

"But as KING MIDAS surged into the lead fully two furlongs out and made the rest of the way home unchallenged, the only excitement generated was by the terrific battle for second and third places.

"ASTROCAN, the last Cambridge runner for Harvey Leader, the veteran Newmarket trainer who retires at the end of this season, produced a strong finishing burst to beat LONDESBOROUGH BOY  by a short head for second place with the blinkered RICHBOY a head away fourth.

Backed at 40-1

"Leader, who has saddled three Cambridgeshire winners, was prevented by flu from attending on Saturday.

"KING MIIDAS, who was running for the executors  of the late Major H.P. Holt, is trained at Kingstone Warren by Derrick Candy, who confessed that he had always regarded KING MIDAS as an ideal Cambridgeshire type and had backed him at 40-1 when the weights were published.

"CULLEN had been engaged as KING MIDAS'S Cambridgeshire jockey before the colt won at York a month ago. KING MIDAS has also twice won over Newmarket's July course this season.

"The first seven to finish in Saturday's race all raced on the stands side and some of the best- fancied  runners, including OUDA, RUGGED, CAINS, ARTHUR and HITESCA, were all drawn high.

The Sport of Kings:

"A word of congratulations was something that Desmond Cullen the freelance jockey who lives in Royston, was trying in his modest, unassuming way to escape after his outstanding success in winning The Cambridgeshire, on KING MIDAS, at Newmarket on Saturday.

"DESMOND, who stands only 4feet 9 inches tall and can ride at 7 stone 3 lbs, has had a remarkably successful season. His winning ride last Saturday notched him up to 42 wins for this season.

"DESMOND, who has been living in Royston for some years, served his apprenticeship at the "Willie"  Stephenson stable in the town where he still "rides out"

"When DESMOND first entered the racing world he was so small and light  that some eminent racing practitioners hesitated to let him ride even a pony let alone a racehorse.

"But DESMOND - my racing colleague writes more fully about him on another page - with grit and determination and enthusiasm  has won his "spurs. ". He is now aged 30. " 1970.

Pic KING MIDAS romps home by three lengths in Saturday's Irish Sweeps Cambridgeshire at Newmarket. The three almost in line are (left to right) ASTROCAN, (second)  LONDESBOROUGH BOY (third) and RICHBOY (fourth) to follow shortly.

KING MIDAS scores with such ease

By John Oaksey at Newmarket

"The Rowley Mile's claim to be England's fairest racecourse took a heavy knock at Newmarket yesterday when the draw appeared to destroy the  chances of about a third of the Cambridgeshire field. The race was won, with almost impertinent ease, by DES CULLEN on the late Major H,P,Holt's KING MIDAS.

"Drawn No. 15, CULLEN was in the ideal position to make up his mind what course to steer - and wisely decided to stay on the stands side.

"The first seven to finish all raced there while some of the best fancied horses,
including CALPERNIUS, ARTHUR, CAIUS, OUDA, RUGGED and HITESCA, were all drawn high and forced to pursue what turned out to be a hopeless lost cause.

"It is hard, not impossible, to believe that not one  of these horses was good enough to get in the first seven and, not for the first time, the race was ruined both as a test and as a spectacle  by the excessive width of the straight mile.

Field splits

"As the field split, PIRATE GLEN went clear on the stands side group and CULLEN, with orders to hold up KING MIDAS as long as possible, found himself, with almost too clear a run.

"On the far side the top weight  CALPERNIUS went straight into the lead and proceeded to run a cruelly gallant race, only giving up the unequal struggle under a furlong from home.

"And by that time  it was unequal , for the stands sides group had at least four lengths' advantage  and CULLEN, throwing caution to the winds had allowed KING MIDAS to pull his way clear.

"As they met the hill RICHBOY second last year, came out of the pack looking as though he would stage a repeat performance. But he too tired in the last 100 yards and ASTROCAN (drawn 1) and LONDESBOROUGH BOY ,

(drawn 13)  pounced to push him back to fourth.

"One sadness"

"But KING MIDAS was home and half dry by that time, and the only sadness is that his owner Major Holt, who died in his 80's on June 1, was not here to see his handsome grey so confound the handicapper's calculations.

"Major Holt had been a long time patron of Derrick Candy's stable  and together they won the Ascot Gold Cup a few years ago with PARBURY. Shortly after that the Major bought a RIBOT colt in America and later selling him profitably to Italy, asked Candy to buy him a yearling. The result was  KING MIDAS who cost £9,000gns.
