But there have already been six of them, and they all died. Why didn’t they
call the royal baby Caligula, to encourage an interest in horses? The Roman

“I
expect the future King George VII will go to Eton, like his father-the school
uniform is good practice for wearing top hat and tails at Royal Ascot; then to
Cambridge Univercity, like his grandfather-well placed for tips to Newmarket
“Great
British Racing, which has already sent the latest royal a splendid teddy bear
wearing the Queen’s colours, will, I hope, soon be followed up with a royal
rocking horse, and a royal Equicizer. Excellent.
“Today
it is the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes, in due course to be the
King George VII and Queen Poppy Stakes (I’m guessing). It’s not one of the
best-looking King Georges, partly because of the sad absence of St Nicholas
Abbey.
“It
will be the first time since 2006 that Aidan O’Brien is unrepresented, I’m not
sure he deserves to have a runner. Let’s face it, has he or has he not made a
bit of a balls- up of Mars’s career? I bet if you asked him he’d say he had,
because 0’Brien’s like that. Beaten when dropped in grade at Leopardstown on
Thursday, I expect Mars is knackered after a demanding schedule and connections
don’t seem to know what the horse’s best distance is.
“That’s
their fault, too, because Mars has one of those funny pedigrees where you
wouldn’t know whether he was likely to be a miler or a middle -distance horse,
or neither. Maybe he’s one of those horses who hasn’t got a distance.
“Mars
has been aimed at the stars but has still only won a maiden on the all-weather
at Dundalk . Will he ever win again? (It’s a
rhetorical question, meaning you don’t have to answer it, and mercifully,
neither do I).
“That
was a bit of a digression, because Mars isn’t running. Never mind.
“As
well as the King George, there’s Ascot ’s
prestigious ladies’ race. Sadly, the days when it was a conditions race readily
reduced to about three realistic contenders are long gone and now it’s another
tricky handicap. When the entries emerged, I quite liked Kakapuka, but trainer
Anabel Murphy did the sensible thing and won with him at Epsom on Thursday
evening instead.
“Martin
Harley gave Kakapuka a good front-running ride and, yes, I did back it, long
before my mate Danny, watching it from Brighton, where there didn’t seem to be
any sign of local resident John McCracken, nor of many horses, although the sea
fret put in an appearance before doing the decent thing and leaving.
“It
wasn’t much of a card but one of the great things about racing is there’s
almost always something of interest. For instance, Chinese Jade won the maiden
to give Sir Mark Prescott his seventh winner from his previous nine runners, and racegoers were able to see Godolphin’s
new apprentice Ahmad Al Subousi, who looked competent on the runner-up
Anglophile.
“Then
the similarly unfamiliar Renato Souza, riding See And Be Seen, pleased himself
but displeased me by just getting the better of Uganda Glory in a race unlikely
to prove a rich source of future winners. After that, Darren Egan showed what
confidence can do for a jockey when completing his treble on Marju’s Quest,
cheered on by, among others, Danny and myself. After that, we went to that nice
Italian restaurant on Preston

“I
should mention that the illuminated sign for Brighton Pier, which reads
‘Brighton Pier’, is remarkable in having all it’s bulbs intact, which reflects
well on whoever is responsible for looking after them. Well done.
“It
might also interest you to know that the roundabout immediately in front of the
Pier is reputed to be the busiest in Europe .
There are also more shops selling sticks of rock than in, well, most places.
“But
I digress. You will want to know what is going to win the ladies race. If you
focus on Graphic, Seattle Drive, Sea The Storm and Mambo Spirit, all with what
are known as “solid form credentials” and all ridden by competent jockey’s, you
will on the way to victory. Unfortunately bookmakers are likely to focus on
exactly the same four horses. Even so, given that it’s a 16-runner handicap,
there should be some each-way value somewhere in that bunch. The quartet will,
of course, supply the first three home, raising tricast possibilities.
“You

at Goodwood
“AT
AROUND 10.30am most mornings this week it will not be difficult to sense
tension in the office at stables with Goodwood runners
“Picture
the scene. Trainer nervously has head clasped in hands. Secretary asked to
check BHA website to learn of draw position for fancied runner on the round
course. A double-digit stall number! Weeks of planning blown asunder. Trainer
goes into sulk and picks up phone to inform owner of negative news. Secretary
keeps head down for rest of day.
“The
draw is traditionally as much of a talking point at Glorious Goodwood as the
phenomenal view stretching to the Isle of Wight, as the strength of the Pimm’s
and silliness of some of those parading Panama hats mothballed for 51 weeks of
the year.
“More
than ever on this opening day, the draw is likely to prove a major factor with
round-course field sizes of 20, 14 and 12. Imagine the angst of Michael Attwater,
whose Bronze Prince is 20 of 20 in the 4.50 today, and Alan Bailey, whose
Strictly Silver is 18 of 18 in the opener. They’d have had a better chance from
Bognor seafront.
“To
quote Baldrick, to win from such positions will require a ride as cunning as a
fox what used to be Professor of Cunning at Oxford University but has moved on
and is now working for the UN at the High Commission of International Cunning
Planning.
“Particularly
over 7 furlongs and a mile, as Richard Hughes explained so expertly in his
Racing Post Saturday column. Rather than ask a wide-draw mount “to climb the
hill for longer, and also run further”,
the champion jockey says his tactic is to drop into the pack and take
pot luck on getting a run when it matters .
“Evidence
conclusively supports his stratergy. Apart from Frankie Dettori (57 wins)
, no present day jockey has been more
successful at this five-day fixture than Hughes (42). He has been leading rider
at the meeting for the past three seasons and holds the record of nine winners,
set in 2010.
“Rain
is forcast for today, which may mask the Isle of Weight, dilute the Pimm’s and
turn that Panama
“WHEN
ground conditions are riding soft, jockey’s tend to migrate to the stands’ side
rail when straightening for home off the round course, in the belief the turf
is quicker – and that manoeuvre, of course, partially negates the disadvantage
of a high draw.
“However,
nobody knows the Goodwood terrain better than Seamus Buckley, the respected clerk of the course who has been
preparing this surface for almost 20 years and he, generally, dismisses the
theory.
“I
believe that’s a legacy from the old days when support vehicles were driven to
and from the start against the stands’ side rail,” he argues.
“That
compacted the turf and there was an advantage, but that’s no longer used by
vehicles and we’ve eased any remaining compaction.
“I
suppose if the ground became very soft later in the week, and the far side
became poached, there may be a minor advantage, but it would be no more than
minimal and a jockey leading to there off the round course would be in danger
of getting isolated.”
“Although
showers are forecast for most days, Thursday is being tipped up as a perfect
summer day. That may be the easiest prediction of the week. It is looking tough
for punters with big-sized fields at both Goodwood and Galway .
“Two
fabulous meetings separated by 500 miles – and in many respects a million miles
apart – but with one common strand. Finding winners is going to be more
difficult than ever. Over to you, Tom Segal. "
