"Cecil memories aplenty thanks to unique man."

Frankel with Khalid Abdullah, Henry Cecil and Tom Queally - Goodwood 2011

Pic: A great team: Sir Henry Cecil with jockey Tom Queally, Frankel and Khalid Abdullah
                     http://frankel.juddmonte.com/media/gallery.aspx#!prettyPhoto

“ANOTHER strange dream. I am sitting in a betting shop studying the form for today’s Queen Mother’s Cup at York when two men walk in.

“They are wearing blue overalls and carrying long-handled wire cutters. The first one looks towards the counter and shouts: “Health and Safety.”

“Then they walk towards the gaming machines, poke around a bit, say “Sorry, mate” to a player and cut the cables.

“An unfamiliar quiet descends. The men wave to the staff and walk out.

“I suppose it wasn’t that surprising because, according to Sigmund Freud, dreams are forms of wish fulfilment. It’s just a pity the men didn’t hang around to find out what won the Queen Mother’s Cup, so I’ll have to work it out myself.

“It’s important because it’s the first race at York and, as you know, what happens in the first determines how confident you are, if you’ve got any money left.

“How different our lives would be if the first race was placed last and the last first. Over the years I think that’s what the problem’s been- they’ve run the races in the wrong order.

“Over similar years, the Queen Mother’s Cup, for lady amateur riders, has been very good for royalty and aristocrats. Princess Anne won the inaugural running in 1988 on Insular.

“Lord Huntingdon won the race in 1998 with Whitechapel and Sir Michael Stoute has won it five times.

“Admittedly, he wasn’t knighted until after the first four triumphs. That may have been why he was knighted, in which case Tim Easterby may soon be on his way to Buckingham Palace  depending on whether or not Crackentorp can land the hat-trick.

“Mick Easterby, Tim’s uncle, won the race in 1999 with Flower O’Cannie and again in 2003 with Sporting Gesture, both ridden by Serena Brotherton.

“The Easterbys are aristocracy of a sort but another aristocrat, Sir Henry Cecil, never did win the Queen Mother’s Cup, which must have been a source of great disappointment to him (I’m guessing).

“Hopefully, his 25 English Classic successes and ten trainer’s championships were some compensation.

“Cecil weaved such a long, distinctive strand in racing’s fabric that we all have our memories, gained from near of far.

“Like others, I picture Cecil’s unique presence at the racecourse and wonder at the extraordinary resurrection of his training career from seemingly irreversible decline when he was already in his 60’s. For that, as well as his own determination, Cecil owed a lot to owner Khalid Abdullah’s loyalty.

“In the final furlong, there was Frankel, a golden sunset during Cecil’s quietly brave and dignified endurance of cancer. It was a disease he knew well, since his twin brother David had died from it when only 57.

“Perhaps that informed and strengthened his resolve and stoicism, while Frankel made it easier to get out of bed.

“CECIL’S racing life reaches far back, even beyond the novelty of Gianfranco Dettori, Frankie’s father, twice registering a 2,000 Guineas and Sussex Stakes double, first with Bolkonski in 1975 then on Wollow the following year. While Frankie talked a lot, his father, with no English, merely smiled. Cecil, I expect, tilted his head and smiled too.

“That sticks in the memory, along with the glorious years with Steve Cauthen in the mid-1980’s, the years of Oh So Sharp, Slip Anchor, Reference Point, and Indian Skimmer.

Falkland was an early favourite of mine, shiny black, with stony-faced Greville Starkey wearing the familiar apricot colours of Lord Howard de Walden to give Cecil the first of his eight victories in the Queen’s Vase in 1972.

“Next Friday, it will be the Queen’s Vase in memory of Sir Henry Cecil. The Royal Ascot crowd will stand quietly, with their own memories; Cecil provided us with a lot. Racing’s wheel will keep turning but a spoke will be missing. The sight of Lady Cecil’s name in the racecard, where Sir Henry’s name appeared, seems strange.

“She doesn’t have a runner in the Queen Mother’s Cup, which is probably just as well, because it would be like submitting a clue for a crossword already full of teasers.

“Can Crackentorp win again? Will Serena Brotherton win for a third time, bringing Sirvino stealing through from the back of a suitably strong pace?

“Does the old faithful, Nanton, have one more win in him? Yes, yes, yes. And who is Emily Bullock, who rides Eagle Rock?

“These are just some of the questions to which I do not know the answer.

“If Jo Richards can overcome a poor draw and Rio’s Rosanna’s hard-pulling tendencies, unsettled, bewildered Rio's Rosanna's hard-pulling tendencies, bad habit to get into in the first place.  Richard Whitaker’s mare might be the answer but it’s safer to rely on Sirvino and solicitor Brotherton to lay down the law.” Is it? Was it? The Law? Who's Law?

ROYAL ASCOT OPENING DAY
Tuesday June 18th
A very interesting racecard today
In the first race we will be able to see ANIMAL KINGDOM in action in Britain for the first time in the 2.30 Queen Anne Stakes over the straight mile at Ascot. ANIMAL KINGDOM couldn't cope with the Ascot Turf, up there with the pace, but faded out, tired at the business end of this race. 5-4f. WIN: DECLARATION OF WAR partner JOSEPH O'BRIEN.  TEAM O'BRIEN. 15-2.

In the second race 3.05 King Stand stakes over 5 furlongs we will see the 3 Year old sprinter RECKLESS ABANDON 3 8-12  5th beaten 2 lengths + at 4-1 taking on some of the older sprinters. We will see  2nd SHEA SHEA 6 9-4.  11-4f. Beaten neck,  by SOLE POWER
6 9-4 partner JOHNNY MURTAGH  8-1. compete, over from South Aftica, and SHAMEXPRESS 4 9-4  9th  12-1. compete, over from Australia.  YES, an exciting sprint indeed..

In the third race 3.45 St James Palace Stakes we will see WIN: DAWN APPROACH partner KEVIN MANNING (TEAM BOLGER) 5-4f. Short Head from TORONADO partner RICHARD HUGHES (TEAM HANNON) 5-1   return after his horrid frightening spookie experience in the British Derby at Epsom, to challenge TEAM O’BRIEN’S MAGICIAN  partner JOSEPH O'BRIEN hampered unable to recover.  and MARS partner RYAN MOORE 3rd 10-1  all three over from Ireland.
Dawn Approach’s temperament at home, is different to his temperament through his experiences to date on the racecourses. Dawn Approach has learned that in his races things are very different than things at home. Dawn Approach is not nearly as trusting on the racecourses as he is at home because he is in a different environment. His spookie fear and panic in the British Derby showed that to be true. Dawn Approach realises that in a race he is expected to go much faster, and in his mind he thinks to himself, well let’s get on with it then, no point in wasting time loitering at the back of the field, when all the other horses are going faster. Hence his fight and flight with Kevin Manning in the Epsom Derby. Yesterday he took a fair grip again on the bridle early on as well. But he took heed of Kevin’s guidance after a bit. Dawn Approach is reacting in his races as a three year old to his experiences to date in the races he has run and won. Watch out here Dawn Approach is saying, strange things are likely to happen. Strange things that Dawn Approach believes that he needs to escape from, he is doubting that he can trust Kevin's guidance as well.

In the fourth race the 4.25 Coventry Stakes over 6f for two year old colts, we will see the young colts just starting out on their racing road career. With still much to learn. We see STUBB’S partner JOSEPH O'BRIEN 5-2f raced keenly throughout until fading at the business end. SIR JOHN HAWKINS partner RYAN MOORE 3rd 6-1 and WIN: WAR COMMAND partner SEAMIE HEFFERNAN  6 lengths  at 20-1  over from Ireland to challenge for (TEAM O’BRIEN)   With JOSEPH O’BRIEN partnering STUBBS 6th.  Racing Post published a great photograph of STUBBS a few days back, showing his beautiful babyish serene expression as he answered Joseph's every call, to win, in those most careful hands. TEAM HANNON challenge with CHAMPIONSHIP partner RICHARD HUGHES 14th 6-1, bumped and lost place.  THUNDER STRIKE partner FRANKIE DETTORI 4th 11-2. WAHAAB partner DANE O’NEILL. 7th at 16-1

In the fifth race the 5.00 Ascot Stakes (handicap) over 2m4f we have the fascinating prospect to see RP Rodney Masters (Saturday June 16th) Sir Henry Cecil’s race story unfold …. Between TIGER CLIFF (IRE) 4 9-7 partner TOM QUEALLY (TEAM CECIL) 2nd
4-1f distance 2l+ and FIRST LIEUTENANT 7 9-1 partner G LEE (TEAM HENDERSON) 3rd
8-1 Both horses belonging to the same owner W H Ponsonby but trained by different trainer teams.  The thread of this true story is that Sir Henry told Ponsonby that TIGER CLIFF would beat FIRST LIEUTENANT, over this trip we will find out this afternoon. It will be interesting to hear what Tanya has to tell us about the betting before the off.
WIN: WELL SHARP 5 9-10 partner F M BERRY. trainer JONJO O'NEILL  9-1. distance two and a half lengths. (Top weight)

The last race 5.35 Windsor Castle Stakes for 2 year olds over 5f Colts carry 9-3. Fillies
8-12.  WIN: EXTORTIONIST (IRE) partner JOHNNY MURTAGH trainer Olly Stevens. a neck from SUPPLICANT partner TONY HAMILTON trainer Richard Fahey 20-1. from  3rd ANTICIPATED (IRE) partner RICHARD HUGHES distance shd. 4-1f. the first 5 horses all close up together in this finish.

WEDNESDAY JUNE 19th TODAY’S ASCOT CARDS

And 2nd  MONTIRIDGE partner RICHARD HUGHES TEAM HANNON. With a field of 21 runners this may cause race hazards of all sorts. A negligence area the British horseracing authority government’s (BHA) has let skid over the last 6 decades due to their bloodhorse illiteracy.

In the second race 3.05. Duke of Cambridge Stakes (Group 2) (fillies and mares) over the straight mile for 4 year olds up, we have looks like 10 runners. A challenger from France SARKIYLA (FR) 4 8-12 partner CHRISTOPHE-PATRICE LEMAIRE trained by A de Royer-Dupre owned and bred by H H Aga Khan. We have CHIGUN 4 8-12 partner TOM QUEALLY trainer Lady Cecil. We have WIN:DUNTLE (IRE) 4 8-12 partner WAYNE LORDAN trainer David Watchman (IRE). In the third race 3.45: Prince of Wales’s Stakes (Group 1) over 1m2f  for 4yo’s and up we have 11 runners CAMELOT 4 9.0 partner JOSEPH O’BRIEN TEAM O’BRIEN. We have

We have SWEET EMMA ROSE from (USA) partner J ROSARIO trainer Wesley A Ward (USA). We have  WIN: RIZEENA (IRE) partner JAMES DOYLE trainer Clive Brittain. THURSDAY JUNE 20th TODAY’S ASCOT CARDS
In the first race 2.30 Norfolk Stakes 5f 2yo colts we have COACH HOUSE partner JOSEPH O'BRIEN TEAM O'BRIEN. These 2 year olds have a lot to learn. What they learn and how they learn depends on who rides them out every day and handles them daily. If not done carefully, all sorts of unwanted highly dangerous and distressing problems can surface. As Nicky Henderson says "All racehorses in training are accidents waiting to happen." A negligence area the British horseracing authority government’s (BHA) has let skid over the last 6 decades due to their bloodhorse illiteracy. The perils of attempting to run British Horseracing without a true Equus Zone.
