"Thanks to Mr Scott I'm no duffer for a while yet."
Pic: + "Ernest Hemingway thought death was a sovereign remedy - so is a big winner

"TOSH! Tosh and balderdash! Well, tosh anyway; Peter Tosh, to be precise, the owner of Union Saint, whose triumph at Exeter on Tuesday had me standing in stands wondering how the Devon farmer had got on at school, where the wrong name, in the company of teachers and pupils, can be fatal.

"This essay is tosh.

"What is it, Tosh?
 "Tosh, sir."
"That's right, Tosh. Tosh by name and, I see now, tosh by nature,"

Goodness me, doesn't this man go on.

"It might have happened. Something similar happened to a school friend of mine called Eric Wright, another unfortunate name.
" Wright!"
"Yes, sir."
"No, Wright, wrong. Do try not to be Wright all the time. I think you'll find it will improve you."

Goodness me,  improve Wright to suit whom?

Do this, do that.

Go here, go there.

Sit down and be quiet.

Children should be seen, and not heard.

Punish, punish, punish

Smack, smack, smack

End of story.

End of who's story?

"Yours you duffer!"

"Union Saint and Tosh brought it all flooding back. We had a maths teacher  who, when presented with a wrong answer, would screw up his face in agony and shout, "You duffer!"
"Its rather a good word, duffer. I might  start using it while watching races.
"Richard Hughes, you duffer! Tom Scudamore, you absolute duffer!" There are a lot of duffers in racing, sometimes riding the horses I've just backed !!!  No, no no.

It' s the British bloodhorse illiterate regulator government politicians who are the duffers. Running British horseracing paying no heed to the rights and the needs of the horses and their handler riders. As our own Queen Elizabeth 11 meetings with Monty Roberts confirms. All living creatures have rights and needs, not just us the two legged variety.

Duffers' yes, yes, yes dump all uncaring duffers' who spend all day Ripping Off the People in Britain, holding positions they are clueless about.

Duffers' are found to be running the British Political System, the British Horseracing Government Authority, the British Legal Justice System,  the Accountancy theory tricksters, the World Banking System, the Inland Revenue, the National Health Service, the Government Beaurocrats,  the Local County Council System, the Medical Profession, the Office of Fair Trading, the Education System. the Church of England. On Sunday in Catholic Mass the Homily was about a mother telling a priest that she did not want her son to take up a career in the priesthood. On account of the poverty and hardship all priests face, and the unnatural standards they are expected to comply with. Upset the Catholic apple cart that Mother did, big time.

Who needs to be taken for granted any longer? Who needs fob off negative 'Lip Service' any longer?  Who needs cruel government bullies any longer? ? Who needs Britain falling to bits all around them.

"Duffer was as far as Mr Ansell went, unlike the teacher who held a weekly test and beat everyone who scored less than the required minimum mark with a small bat, as many times as the shortfall in marks.

"Then there was Mr Bailey, the English teacher who, inspired either by Wackford Squeers in Nicholas Nickleby or by test cricketer Colin Cowdrey, beat offenders with a full-size cricket bat.

"The headmaster, the terrifying (to 13- year olds) Brigadier Harry Butler Hitchens, would ask a question then challenge your answer and,  when you crumbled pathetically, boom, "Stick to your guns,  man, stick to your guns!"

"Later, Hitchins shot himself. The music master didn't but probably wished he had after, taunted mercilessly, he yelled at the class and his false teeth shot out and chattered across the floor. It was difficult to recover from that. In those days, when taken together, this was known as 'the education system'.

"What, you may ask, has this got to do with horseracing?" It's a good question, a fair question, and a tricky one to answer. My theory is that it will be forgiven as long as there's a winning tip at the end of it.

Sir David Attenborough

Born 8 May 1926, the younger brother of actor Lord Richard Attenborough. He never expressed a wish to act and, instead, studied Natural Sciences at Cambridge University, graduating in 1947, the year he began his two years National Service in the Royal Navy. In 1952, he joined BBC Television at Alexandra Palace and...See full bio »

The first thing noticed is David's kindness, how quietly and carefully he respects all living creatures, and his quest to get to know and understand them all, is truely great. A massive achievement.

 Virginia McKenna

We see the very same foundation qualities when we take  a closer look at the life and times of Virginia McKenna

Virginia McKenna, OBE - Founder and Trustee
Following a successful career as an actress, Virginia started Zoo Check in 1984 with her late husband, Bill Travers, and eldest son, Will, after the premature death of Pole Pole, an elephant she had come to know during the filming of 'An Elephant Called Slowly' who was later gifted to London Zoo by the Kenya Government. Zoo Check later became the registered charity, the Born Free Foundation. Whilst Virginia still finds time to work occasionally as an actress, her leading role now is within the conservation and animal welfare movement. Virginia has also authored, co-authored and co-edited numerous books as well as travelling extensively over the years visiting zoos about which the Born Free Foundation has received complaints and, wherever possible, she accompanies rescued Big Cats to Born Free’s sanctuaries in India and South Africa. Virginia also speaks at numerous events, supports various other charitable organizations and is patron to many others.

"Ernest Hemmingway once described death as "a sovereign remedy for all misfortunes", but I think a decent winner is a much better one and less inconvenient.

"Talking of winning tips and decent-priced winners, if you ignored last week's statement "my selections have been whittled down to Adam Scott and Luke Donald" - you may have failed to back Scott for the US Masters at 25-1. If so, you've only yourself to blame and, as far as I'm concerned, I can now tip 24 losers in a row before anyone is entitled to complain. I can and probably will.

"Tipping is a tricky business. In my experience (very brief, 1987), it's like driving off the top of the Eiffel Tower, something to be done only once, when you feel that life hasn't supplied as much embarrassment, guilt and humiliation as you'd like.

"Starting a tipping service will soon put that right and I brought mine to a speedy end when a client wrote to ask if I'd like to subscribe to the tipping service he was about to launch.

"Soon after that, I wrote a booklet called How To Stop Gambling, which demonstrated that, on the whole, people preferred to carry on, provided the tips were good enough.

"In the cold pursuit of profit, there is no place for romance, except to exploit it. Take Auroras Encore, suddenly famous for winning the John Smith's Grand National and about to attempt to match Red Rum's feat, achieved in 1974, by also winning the Coral Scottish Grand National'

"A picture of Ryan Mania, victorious again, would be a wonderful sight but, at the risk of stamping on the strawberry jelly and ice cream at a children's party, the cruel reality is Auroras Encore will not be placed, let alone win.

"He is rated 5lb higher than when finishing second last year and, only two weeks after his gruelling Aintree effort, has to carry 11st 12lb instead of last year's 10st 11lb on ground more testing than last year.

"It is therefore my responsibility to recommend laying Auroras Encore for a place. Not, perhaps, all your houses, but ones you treasure least. Then put one on Godsmejudge, each-way, and don't complain if it all goes wrong and they turn out to be the tips of a duffer. I've still got 22 more tips to go before Mr Ansell's ghost taps me on the shoulder."
