THE RACING POST REPORT MONDAY MAY 2nd 2011

FIRST FLYING FRANKEL .... THEN FLYING FRANKIE
“It was a weekend that will live long in the memory with Saturday’s stunning 2,000 Guineas and BLUE BUNTING’S win in yesterday’s fillies’ Classic.”

JON LEES REPORTS: “CLASSIC JOY FOR AL ZAROONI.”
“The first weekend of British racing’s new Champion Series concluded in a fashion beyond its creators’ wildest dreams as a day after the Qipco 2.000 Guineas fell to a superstar racehorse, superstar jockey Frankie Dettori captured the Qipco 1,000 Guineas.

“Dettori, hired as the face of the 35-race series devised to showcase the best of Britain’s racing, had not expected to have much more than a PR role to play in the season’s first two Classics.

“But the rider, who left the press launch early, arrived late on BLUE BUNTING at Newmarket to hand second-season Godolphin trainer Mahmood Al Zarooni his first British Classic.

“Exceeding expectations, 16-1 chance BLUE BUNTING finished strongly up the stand’s rail. To snatch victory from TOGETHER, with MAQAASID in third.

“Godolphin’s chances of ending a nine-year wait since their last win in either Guineas had looked forlorn in the wake of setbacks to colt DUBAI PRINCE and filly WHITE MOONSTONE, but  BLUE BUNTING more than made up for their absence.

BROUGH SCOTT, latest plans for Cecil superstar, plus Topspeed on that wonder victory.”
Plus “Big-race report, ALASTAIR DOWN  and Monday Jury.”

“Hills 74 and responsible for 11 Classic winners, says, however that he has become increasingly irritated by the factional infighting gripping racing on so many levels and by its lack of direction.
“Meanwhile, the thoughts of ‘Mr Chester’ are focused on the Roodee where he has sent out more than 150 winners. Hills approaches Chester with a stable in form. “I’m happy with the horses” he added, “They’re very fit and very well. In fact I don’t think I’ve seen them look so well.
“A similar comment applies to the trainer himself who has tenaciously overcome serious illness and has a renewed spring in his step.”
Why not follow Barry’s runners at Chester this week and see how they get on? You won’t be disappointed
